St Kilda
The archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, lies 41 miles (66 kilometres) west of Benbecula in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The island was dramatically evacuated on On 29 August 1930, when, at their own request, the remaining 36 St Kildans were removed to Morvern on the Scottish mainland.
These photographs, taken in 2006, show the poignant remains of Main Street on Hirta but they can only hint at the harshness of life on St Kilda. The archipelago, a World Heritage Site, remains very difficult to get to but visitor numbers have risen to nearly 3,000 per year. Moves are afoot to restrict access to ensure this magical place is preserved - let's hope that they succeed.
